Ayurvastra means “Ayur” (life/health) and “Vastra” (cloth). We follow ancient Ayurvedic practices to create our textiles. The five elements — water, fire, earth, air, space — are part of the process. We use only natural organic plant dyes from leaves, roots, barks, stems, and seeds, with no harmful chemicals or toxins. All dye baths are infused with Kasyam, a blend of 22+ organic Ayurvedic herbs inherited through our lineage, with tridoshic (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) balancing qualities. The Gayatri Mantra is chanted over the herbal baths to seal the energy of the herbs into the cotton.
We dye the threads before weaving, so the medicinal herbs penetrate deep into the fibres. The threads are then handwoven into cloth, and the weaving helps bind the healing properties into the fabric. These fabrics can support balance in the body, are especially beneficial for sensitive skin, and are ideal for supporting health and wellbeing.
Dyeing the fibres before weaving gives consistent, even colour and is the traditional Ayurvedic approach. It allows the medicinal and healing properties of the plants to penetrate deep into the fibres. Dyeing finished fabric can lead to uneven colour and does not achieve the same depth of herbal infusion.
Each colour comes from a different natural organic plant dye, each with its own benefits. For example, Indigo (blue) is calming and clarifying; Turmeric (yellow) is associated with relief from inflammation. Some colours use two dyes — e.g. Turmeric and Indigo create a verdant green with the benefits of both. You can find the healing benefits of each dye on our What is Ayurvastra and product pages.
Yes. Our textiles are free from synthetic chemicals and are made to be gentle and supportive for sensitive skin. We use no chemical dyes or mordants; even the mordant used where necessary (e.g. natural alum) is natural. There is nothing synthetic in our products or our process.
Yes. Each colour is achieved with a specific plant dye, each with its own healing properties. Many people are drawn to the colour that their body needs. The colours also resonate with the seven chakras; our Chakra Yoga Rug is woven so that each band aligns with a chakra and its traditional plant dye.
They may fade over time, but because the yarn is dyed before weaving (rather than the finished product), the colour typically lasts longer than standard plant-dyed fabric — often 15–20 washes with gentle care. Keep pieces out of direct sunlight when possible; airing on a line is fine. Use a gentle detergent or soap-nuts (available on our site) to help retain colour.
A full collection includes one Yoga Rug, two Yoga Blocks, one Meditation (Pranayama) Pillow, and optionally soap-nuts for care. It comes with an explanation of our Ayurvastra practice, the healing properties of your chosen colour, and care instructions.
Yes. When you purchase the full Healing Textiles collection you receive a 10% discount, plus a further 10% off future purchases.
Air them on a line but avoid direct sunlight. If washing, wash separately on a gentle cycle in cold water with a mild cleanser such as soap-nuts. Dry in the shade and keep out of direct sunlight. Avoid storing in plastic; use breathable storage such as cloth bags or wooden boxes. Soap-nuts are available on our site.

Working this way means nothing is created that isn't wanted — no overproduction, no waste. Shipping one collective order at a time rather than individual items is also significantly better for the environment. And , most importantly because this is the best way to support the dyeing and weaving communities who create these textiles, giving them consistent and reliable work throughout the year.
