Ayurvastra is the ancient Indian tradition of dyeing textiles with medicinal herbs so that the cloth itself supports healing, balance, and wellbeing. At Healing Textiles, we honour this practice by working with artisan communities who prepare organic cotton with Kasyam (22 Ayurvedic herbs) and botanical plant dyes, then handweave each piece on traditional looms. The result is fabric that is gentle on skin, free from synthetic chemicals, and rooted in centuries of wisdom.
Ayurvastra has its roots in Ayurveda — the system of health and living that has been practised in India for millennia. Textiles were historically dyed with herbs such as turmeric, neem, tulsi, sandalwood, and indigo not only for colour but for their therapeutic qualities. Cloth was used to wrap the body, support recovery, and maintain balance in daily life. Over time, this knowledge was passed down through lineages of dyers and weavers, often in tandem with spiritual practice. Today, as interest in natural materials and holistic wellbeing grows, Ayurvastra is being revived by those who value authenticity, sustainability, and the connection between what we wear or practise on and our health.
Healing Textiles exists to make this tradition accessible without compromising its authenticity. We work with partners who follow the full process — Kasyam, mantra, plant dyes, handloom — and we offer clear information about each herb and colour so you can choose what supports you. Every rug, pillow, and block is made in small batches, with no synthetic chemicals, so you can practise and rest on cloth that is soft on skin and strong on healing.

Ayurvastra means “Ayur” (life/health) and “Vastra” (cloth). We follow ancient Ayurvedic practices to create our textiles. The five elements — water, fire, earth, air, space — are part of the process. We use only natural organic plant dyes from leaves, roots, barks, stems, and seeds, with no harmful chemicals or toxins. All dye baths are infused with Kashayam, a blend of 22+ organic Ayurvedic herbs inherited through our lineage, with tridoshic (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) balancing qualities. The Gayatri Mantra is chanted over the herbal baths to seal the energy of the herbs into the cotton.
We dye the threads before weaving, so the medicinal herbs penetrate deep into the fibres. The threads are then handwoven into cloth, and the weaving helps bind the healing properties into the fabric. These fabrics can support balance in the body, are especially beneficial for sensitive skin, and are ideal for supporting health and wellbeing.
Dyeing the fibres before weaving gives consistent, even colour and is the traditional Ayurvedic approach. It allows the medicinal and healing properties of the plants to penetrate deep into the fibres. Dyeing finished fabric can lead to uneven colour and does not achieve the same depth of herbal infusion.
